PostSubject: In my experience of saltwater hetmit crabs   Fri Dec 28, 2012 1:28 am

When I was doing research about sea urchins in La Union (Region 1), I came across numerous saltwater hermit crabs.
I collected like 8 of them (from teenee tiny to about 5php coin-sized).
Since I am really from Baguio City, I brought along ample supply of sand with them.
They were really great to look at..
I open their warm yellow light (like that used in raising chicks; i guess 45watts ? I forgot but it was warm and also for my Ts) from 7pm to 10pm. They are confined in a 5 gallon tank initially but transferred them in solos or duos.
I provided some shells too (bought at SM Baguio in their souvenir area).
The tiny ones immediately grew up and molted and changed their shells.
I noticed they have the attitude of getting a larger shell previously used by another then the former resident of the shell moves to the new shells I offered.
By having a tortoise at home also, I feed them lots of greens (Pechay, Kangkong) and sometimes moist bread, scrambled eggs (rinsed well due to the oil).
I had them more than a year.
From a speck they became little voracious eaters (since I never tried not feeding them and I remove their leftovers or change their gravel every month) and I housed them individually (I think 1 or 2 in every critter keeper).
But when I asked my maid to water them (just 4 or 5 months ago) and used the city's water supply (and obviously, I meant chlorinated water),
they all died. Sad
If only I was more personal with them that time, I would've done it and prevented mass mortality.

I will try having them again when I visit a nearby beach.
I miss having those critters although they are a bit noisy rattling and re-arranging their area.
Wouldn't miss a chance to take care of them again if I get the chance to get hold of these specimens again.

For those interested in having them as pets, just mist them with mineral water (as aforementioned) when they are a bit dry, I use the sand I collected which I reckon was a source of salt (that was what I was thinking of when I collected them), put some food I have mentioned, some warm light source for about 3-4 hours and you're good to go. Smile

*I think I saw a post in google wherein they mentioned the oldest hermit crab in captivity was more than 50 years by an old lady (? I think I need to get back to that post again) so might as well prepare for long-term relationship when taken cared of properly. Smile

@lonelyboy: I would love to have a specimen as yours. Smile Hopefully I can find one. Smile

@adrian vincent: thank you sir for sharing your experience, now i know what to do and what not to do with my newly collected hermits, although i returned some of them to the beach because as you've said they're noisy trying to climb out of their enclosure banging their shells against the terrarium glass

@dlonelyboy: baka nag last molt na sa inyo sir? Malaki na kasi eh

@Mazach: I think they never stop molting po until old age. They are great pets too since habitat destruction is getting stressful for them like the place where I collected my specimens. They converted the beach into urchin farm meaning, more and more tourists get attracted to the area equals more wastes. What I can advice you is to give them wide selection of shells as they are like impulsive humans..if they think they want a shell they encounter from their wanderings, they move to another. I have this one hermit crab who likes to change its shell like every two days (but I think I am overfeeding them so they change shells when they get fatter). I think I will go gather again. I am visiting up north tomorrow or the next day. I enjoy the hermit crab which is reddish pink in color (if you notice them at all).. quite interesting as they get more intensely reddish as they grow. They are like Ts din pero they molt at longer intervals and I haven't noticed any changes in color or behavior in terms of feeding and movement when they are due for a molt. Or maybe I am just not that sensitive. However, I don't know what species we have here in the Philippines making the less predictable to say, growth and longevity. Most literature you get from the internet is quite biased as they are based from the UK and USA or I was able to overlook at those sites. Smile

2 types din ang land hermit crabs. ung seashore/saltwater type at ung forest or cave/freshwater type.

yup every full moon, breeding season or after molting pumupunta sila sa seashore para maghanap ng larger shells.
